DIY Puzzles

If you're concerned about the cost of building up a large puzzle toy chest, do not worry!  You can make your own puzzle toys that will work out your dog's brain just as well as any puzzles we sell in our store.

Most homemade puzzle toys will need to be much more closely supervised with your dog!  They have not been made to withstand normal dog chewing and your dog can really hurt herself if she chews off pieces.  Ingesting sharp pieces could be fatal and will certainly lead to expensive vet bills.

You can use any empty, clean bottle as a puzzle toy, like a plastic Coke bottle or milk jug.  Fill it with your dog's food and actively supervise.  Once you start seeing tears or if your dog chews too much and you can't redirect, take the toy away and find another to use.

Another option for working out your dog's brain on a budget is to make him use his sense of smell to find his food.  With these options, we again recommend supervising, at least at first.

  • Some people take their dog's food and scatter is all over the floor or in a space outside in the grass.
  • You can also put your dog's food in little bowls and hide them all over a room, your whole house, or outside.
